Abode of the Gods

2 MAR 2004 TUESDAY
Published in Free Press Journal Indore by Mridual Kalia Bhatnagar

The temples, mosques, dargahs, gurudwaras, synagogues, churches…. The Indian landscape is dotted with the places of worship. I wonder if any one would know how many? I wonder if the correct number is listed or has figured in any directory. Temples, Mosques, Gurudwaras and innumerable places of worship such as Dargahs spring up at places as weird as the centre of the a boulevard, at crossroads, on the railway crossing, on the highway bridge and in the trunk of a tree, in the cave of a hill and even a steep turning..(even on the Gate pillar of a building) At many places faith arises out of fear because these places are accident prone areas. But the problem arises when these small places to offer obeisance become larger than life. They grow in size thanks to the growing faith and growing number of deities. Is faith directly proportion to the size of the temple? Won’t a prayer be answered if offered at a small place?

The fact is it is far easier to build a place of worship on a buffer land or on a disputed property. The goons in the builders lobby do it to harass someone. Some others will do it to enforce encroachment on government or private land. They erect four walls and place a religious symbol in it. If someone dares to ask he is blasphemous. Any god fearing common man will get scared to tamper it. The non believer criminals don’t have love lost for anyone and certainly no fear of god.
The Moguls who invaded India were certainly men of criminal bent of mind. They caused lots of destruction to men, material and mandirs during their rule. Many generations later Hindus are trying to settle a score. But this time they should not perpetuate the same mistake because somewhere the line must be drawn. Babri masjid- Ramjanambhoomi has to set a precedent for so many other religious sites where mandir and masjid co-exist. One thing is for sure that Gods, Hindu or Muslim, can surely stay side by side. Although one still does not understand how two diverse religious structures come to be built in the same vicinity in the first place. And if they did, there surely had been harmony at the time of construction.

Few would know that right atop Charminar there is a masjid to offer prayers and right below in one of the four minars towards the east is a small but conspicuous temple. Surely it must be agreeing with the Muslims in that predominately Muslim area. I could not gather more information about its origin. The vendors and shopkeepers in and around Charminar area have no clue about how it came into existence. It is an integral part of the world famous structure that is Hyderabad’s signature on the world tourist map.

Our religion is our social conditioning. Our faith is our own. I know of a Muslim young man who always visits Lord Balaji in Tirupati every six months without letting anyone know that he is Muslim. That does not make him any lesser musalman because he offers his namaz to Allah with the same sincerity.

We are lucky to be born in a country where religious freedom is fundamental right. There are family owned temples which actually are extended pooja-ghars but on religious festivals they are decked up only to attract devotees and of course donations. The fact is that these places are moolah raking sites. There are people who operate these places as businesses. For them God is nothing but a commodity. This is true for Dargahs as well.

It is important to be religious but it is time we learn to respect each other’s religion as well. Tolerance is the key. We can not go on building religious structures indiscriminately at any place. Some times with such disregard to the surroundings that there is a heap of garbage right behind or a dirty nullah flowing right besides. It is no good to erect new places of worship and abandon the old historical ones. There are famous religious sites, now only the so called heritage sites, and in common man’s terms ‘ruins.’ I would say famous Ellora temple which has lost its religious importance and has been reduced to just being an ancient site. There are many others like that.

The right to religious freedom does not mean that we forget about the future of these structures and the future of the structures we are going to make. We have to plan and develop these sites else we will be disrespectful and blasphemous. There has to be a law that new places need to be registered before constructing them. There has to be a trust to ensure that these places are taken care of. Government should have the right to demolish any illegal and unregistered such place.
One is astounded at the Shiva temple of Ellora which is said to be carved from top to bottom, feels puny standing next to the 7 ft. tall Shivlinga in the Bhojpur temple, and feels ecstatic going to Shankracharya temple in Srinagar where the valley of Kashmir seems so serene. There are many more fantastic religious places which have gathered the dust of time. Why not make these places accessible? Why not develop these and worship there?

Even the new, to be built, places of worship should be placed in locations where loud speakers or big congregation does not cause inconvenience to the residents. There should be minimum specified area and minimum specified requirements to ensure civic amenities to develop such places. Since these places are money collecting centre by way of donations by the public, a percentage of these collections must be paid back to the government to enable better connectivity and better civic amenities around that area. The Tirupati Devasthanam is one such place and Balaji is said to be richest Lord in the world due to the huge sums of donations received. Not only that these places should also be held accountable and they should disclose their statement of accounts to the public vide news papers. The religious heads and leaders should be held responsible for development of these areas and all the activities that take place in these premises. The same should be done for Ajmer Sharif Dargah and Shirdi Sai Baba or any Churches, Gurdwaras, Synagogues or Fire temples across all religions.

History has it on records that the places of worship have been exploited as shelters for nefarious and terrorist activities. Golden temple, HazratBal and may be many others have been the hideouts of terrorists. Such activities can be checked only if regular inspection of these premises is allowed to be carried out.

It’s time that all the religious places are registered and governed by some laws. Its time to stop indiscriminate erection of such structures and evaluate the importance of existing ones so that we and the generations to come learn to truly worship at abode of the gods.

My Independecne Day

Just now saw the Tricolour being unfurled in the school next door. It conjured up emotions. I love this moment when Tiranga opens up and showers its petals all around ..like blessings and then sways proudly. I thank God for sending me to this Great Nation. Its an amazing feeling to be Bhartiya, Hindustani.

During childhood my mother ensured that we made this day special. Her nana was a freedom fighter and so our mom had lot of stories to tell. She was a five year old when the country was divided. Though our family was rooted in Punjab my mom had heard/seen poignant stories including that of a Muslim family staying with them as tenants. So we kind of knew the price we Bharatwasis paid for this freedom. And we value it. Thanks to all that she shared with us.

I still remember myself, an eight year old, singing patriotic song... 'Desh de Tirangaya' at Azad Chowk.. a prominent city chowk for official Independence Day celebrations. In my school it was the most beautiful ambience. We sang, we paraded and we ate ladoos. Yes, we always got two ladoos on this days... the sweetness of those is lingering till this day.

After school days got over, my youngest brother Vineet used to wish all of us.. "Happy Independence Day" and make our day so special. It was amazing when the expected D day for my second child was marked as 15th Aug. Mostly the actual date of delivery changes. On 14th my doctor said, "Ma'am, we will induce on 16th Aug" .......as 15th Aug is a national holiday. The doctor came for a short round on the morning of 15th August and was taken aback seeing a baby next to me. "Yeh kab hua?"
"Wee hours... last night...early morning of 15th August."
He smiled. I smiled. My child was born on the most wonderful day when there is festivity and joy in the air. Always. Year after year. The ladoos are distributed.

Happy Independence day... !! Lets hear our great PM from the Lal Quila and feel that pride in our hearts.

Jai Hind!!

What's in a surname?

My daughters' passports were to be re-issued.. (RE-ISSUED) and the passport clerk spotted an GROSS error..Surnames do not match with those of the parents. So objection was raised. I went to APO and finally they dug out old application records and cleared the case. Both my girls have their OWN names in full..no surnames or family names. I have to explain this many times to many people that I have given my children a unique identity..they don't have to change their names after marriage etc. My husband is appreciative and supportive of this decision and the school has finally understood that too. Else I was known as Mrs So and so, four different surnames, my maiden, my married one and with my two daughters' second names.

Once a an Air India staffer at Kolkata airport asked me the reasons for no surnames and when I explained it to her, she said, "Hats off ma'am. You are a gutsy women." Guts? It is logical way to give a Girl Child her due place in society. Let her not be known by someone's name and keep changing her identity with changes in her marital status. A name is one's identity and sadly I see many women losing a part of them in these petty changes. Some feel guilty and some feel sad about changing it. Besides everything, it is whole lot of paperwork and unnecessary affidavits that one makes for these changes. As the passport clerk said.. some come for change after marriage, some after divorce and some after remarriage. What a waste of energy, time and resources, Give your girls an UNIQUE NAME and teach them to make a name for themselves. That will bring about a great change in their attitudes and in the society. Whats in a name? Lots, when you have to go through the official documentation. Its legal, social and emotional issue.

Vande Matram, Jai Hind...Happy Republic Day!!

Today is Republic Day... and I was at the Marine Drive with many others who became a part of this historical celebration. It was a perfect setting for celebrating a National festival. Wonder why it took 35 long years to bring Republic Day Parade to Queen's Necklace...the famous Marine Drive... Vast Arabian Sea on one side and heritage Marine Drive buildings on the other...while thousands sat or stood on the promenade, hundreds stood on their terraces and balconies to spread cheer to the mighty display of valour, pride and India's diverse colourful culture..

Bombay is Bollywood and glamour and while the exotic Vintage beauties rolled on to the Marine drive it brought in the bollywood starz on ground..literally taare zameen par. A double delight visual treat, it gave a befitting finale to the historical Republic Day parade at the Marine Drive aka Netaji Subhash Chander Bose road.

Following are the links to my Public Albums for you to enjoy... Have fun, Happy Republic Day to you all...

Who the hell is Aditya Thackeray???

Who the hell is Adiya Thackeray?? Wait, I think the name rings a bell... is he related to Bal Thackeray?? And Raj Thackeray?? Well he has to be..the way his henchmen have handled a respected old lady principal of Hinduja College. It runs in the family..isn't it. The pseudo pride, display of political clout and disrespect for freedom of expression.

I am appalled at the insecurity he has. Is it a serious identity crisis or a dented ego? Is it a opportunity used for creating an unnecessary stir to get some media mileage? Sorry to say Aditya you have let me down. You have let many others down who thought of you as a probable young leader. Let me tell you that you have not achieved anything thus far, other than the famous surname. As Aditya no one knows you or recogenises you. You are a no body. I know that you like any other youngster want to be somebody but piggybacking your henchmen you will end up no where.

If at all you wanted, you would have not paid heed to such an issue and would have given a shut up call to your Yuva Sena and told them to concentrate on more constructive nation building events. But nah..you the famous Thackerays.. won't spare an opportunity to stir a storm in a tea cup.. like always. But politics aise toh chalti hai... hai na beta?

I don't care what has happened in the past but you Adiya, you can dare to be different. Gather some courage and go and say sorry to Chitra Natrajan, who is old enough to be your mother. You can bring about a change... change the way your party works. The new world is not stupid and forgiving and subservient as it was in the times of your grand dad. No one can bulldoze their way in the present times or someone will steer the bulldozer over them. I hope you can understand.

Good Boy! Rahul..

O boy!! Rahul Gandhi has decided NOT to marry...in nation's interest. If only his father, the dashing Rajiv Gandhi, also had the similar kind of patriotic feel and sense of responsibility, the nation would have been spared of many scams which were planned from Italy...the land of his lady love.

This is the only time the young lad (he's still called Rahul Baba) has decided what he WILL do..(rather what he will not do... to get marry) Forty may still be young age to be a youth Congress leader but it surely is way past the age where cute romances blossom. :(

I any case you can become a husband only when you grow up.....to be a man!!!
So good decision boy!! Truly in the nation's interest. :) :)

Pre Marital Sex ???? OMG, OMG !!!!

Preity Zinta is back in town and busy chatting up with tweeple about the hackneyed PMS..pre marital sex. Oolala! That was my the lead story in Deccan Chronicle's Sunday Page co authored with a friend. A well researched article that was published in 1994 in DC sizzled the ground I walked on. The heat was unbearable. The responses ranged from this extreme to that. Many chose to believe our researched facts in the story and others just chose to abuse me and look at me with suspicion and contempt because I was a young unmarried woman writing about it. What people did not understand that I was not endorsing or supporting PMS.

I had not known the story was already in print for the Sunday edition when I walked into the DC office on a Thursday evening that time and the reactions and the glances of some people were just too much to handle. Uff!!!

As a woman writer I always feel  sensitive to whatever gets written about sex...pre or post marriage. And how the spoken word goes around. From an innocuous SEX column where each one of us have been ticking Male/Female to announce who we are to SEX as a three letter forbidden word the whole perspective changes.

Read this:
i think it's completely OK as sex is an emotion more out of love than marriage & love does not wait for marriage to happen.

Army Chief goes to Court against Indian Government

In an unprecedented move, the Army Chief has taken the age matter to the court. Its a disgrace to the ministry of defence and Indian Govt. PM Manmohan Singh has tried offering a carrot to the Chief by making him the Governor of Goa but Gen VK Singh has ignored the bait and decided to take the Govt head on. Congress is underplaying it but every body knows what game is being played. In any case do you think the corrupt and morally bankrupt Sonia's coterie would let an honest General continue in the office for one more year? If he does he will bring out many more skeletons, some of which may have matching DNA with the corrupt Government in the centre.

Every Indian must stand up for Gen. VK Singh. The country needs him more than he needs to continue in the office. If he stays in the chair for the term which is rightfully his, he will be handing over the baton to another very able and strong General in General Parnaik.

'Do you have it in you?' Don't join the Indian army!

Hey guys, have you read the title clearly? 'Do you have it in you'....is what Army advertisement challenges you, dares you, asks you and pulls you towards, what is made to look very very attractive, a career in the defence forces. I tell you if you have it in you don't join the forces. The glossy painted picture of men in OGs and lush green golf courses seen on the billboards is purely for graphic representation, so are the other details like perks and free house. What an army ad never displays is a "Conditions Apply".

I have strong reasons for saying so. I am taking the case of this serving officer having given 20 years of his life to this organisation. A confirmed bachelor who does not intend marrying is being refused an army accommodation for his old parents. So, here is a condition that only married officers get accommodation. Quite a paradox because whether one has a wife or not, everyone has parents, right? To marry or not to marry is a personal choice. If the old parents are entitled to medical and CSD facilities, how can an accommodation be denied them? Every officer is entitled to a perk called accommodation. So why not a bachelor? More certainly, if it has to accomodate his old parents. For a bachelor old parents are his only family.

The army HQ says that this the first case of its kind and if they approve it,  it will be setting a precedent. So, they conveniently disapprove this officers plea to his right to have an accommodation for his parents. Wtf ! Do they mean to say that last 64 years we have never had a bachelor officer wanting accommodation for his parents? Not even one instance? Complete bullshit!

I will write more about the WHO"S WHO of army who are retaining the houses in the metros on pretexts for which many precedents would have been set. Fauj is in its own words "Fucked up". Its not for nothing that Army Chief ' s DOB details are messed with. The General has gone to the court. The officer who is written about here has taken the matter to court. Fauj, as they say, has really gone to the dogs.

Share this, talk about it in media.  You may do good to many soldiers who commit their lives to the nation unconditionally but offered perks on conditions.

Be seen Be heard....Be a Krantikari

To all my fellow Indians please be a part of this movement where ever you are. This is the time to unite AGAINST CORRUPTION AND THE CORRUPTION. Share this and let every body know of it. Please talk to your Auto wala, your cabbie, your maid, your servant, your liftman, postman or just about anyone you meet. Educate them and bring them into the folds of IAC.
